***Love them back with a Sense of Responsibility ***

I realized the importance of my mother, when post schooling I left my house & headed to pursue my intermediate studies in a place nearby, I was missing my home, my mother her care, affection, food etc.

I realized the importance of my sister when one fine day she was not in home & I came to know that she has gone for a holiday at my grandma's place in our  village The house was literally void without her. She was that time 8 or 9yr old kid & we used to play after returning from school.

I realized the importance of my wife when she has relocated to a different town for her office project & left me for a year in our so called home. The home was gradually converted in to a bachelor room & I felt more lonely when came back home from work.

Well you must be wondering, Why am I sharing all these with you, It's because, these are the three most lovable woman in everyone's life, who stand behind us at every steps of our life. The warmth, care, nurture that we used to get from these three is supposed to be unparalleled.

But wait....are we also sensible enough for these women & taking care of their health & wellness, so that they will live a healthy & beautiful life. Well there are little things that we all can do, which can give us & them a bit satisfaction. Probably they may not find time or ignore their health because of their daily mundane work life. However being a son, brother or a husband,   if we can take this responsibility towards them by educating ourselves & them it will be like rewarding their effort.

Being woman is one of the toughest challenge, because of the variety of responsibility vested on them which many a time we ignore. Moreover getting older invites a lot of complication in terms of health & wellness. Especially when we do have a family history of  diabetes, cancer etc thing should be taken care more seriously.

Here we have highlighted few precautions, that the women should take care & follow religiously, to have a healthy & cancer free life. These are very basic things, which if we insist  to every woman who are in our surrounding then probably we can avoid one of the most deadly disease (cancer) of society.

Well the statistics says Breast followed by Cervical cancer is the most common types of cancer in India. Hence the by practising the following things regularly will definitely help to  have a healthy & disease free life.

Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.  Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important. (source: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-self-exam)

·       As per the American clinical association If you have a family history of breast cancer—especially in a close relative like a parent or sibling & you are 30 or more then do a Clinical breast exam every three years.

·        If you are 40 or more then do a Clinical breast exam every year but you should add the Mammogram once in every two years.

·        If you are 50 or more then do a Clinical breast exam & Mammogram every year.

The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool is also a good tool to evaluate the risk of getting cancer in life time. It's an interactive tool designed by scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) to estimate a woman's risk of developing invasive breast cancer. (https://www.cancer.gov/bcrisktool/).
More ever we at Vtreat foundation take it as our one of the mission to help people to diagnose cancer early so that they can get the best ever treatment available & live a disease free life. Project V.I.B.E (V treat Initiated Breast Examination)  is our initiative towards propagating the importance of cancer screening & conducting free cancer screening camps in association with the oncology fraternity of the city. You can get more details about V.I.B.E by visiting the link (https://www.facebook.com/events/212023552586109/).

So we should take charge of our family by educating the special woman in our lives who make us smile all the ways of our life.

Project VR1 ( Spreading joy in million faces)

Have you ever encountered a situation when you have thought of something & the outcome is entirely opposite???  Well some time it happens to us also, if something good happens we generally tell it as blessing in disguise or else we just curse ourselves.......

Well once we were doing a brainstorming, where we were deciding the objective behind  association with V Treat & the work we would like to do here, everybody was suggesting some or other things. I was quite clear to make it a cancer foundation as I am from the pharmaceutical industry & the daily suffering of cancer patients in the hospitals was a good enough reason for me to convince other members. However there was an instant proposal came from Niharica one of our team member who was being associated with an orphanage for last 8 yrs. When she explained her association with the orphanage & the way she was trying to extend a helping hand towards that orphanage made us think in that direction. W thought of maybe it's a blessing in disguise

The idea with which she came to the board was, lets visit them & understand their needs & requirement. So the next weekend we just planned our trip to the orphanage with our fellow members & trust me the experience was amazing!!

We were a group of 8 members who had visited the place near Hayathnagar ( Hyderabad), I had never seen an orphanage before. I was getting a mix response, in one way I was happy because we got a new mission for our foundation, but the other side was quite gloomy. I was just trying to answer a question within myself why this discrimination of nature, what's wrong these kids had done??

Any way there were around 80 Kids in the premises of CSS ( Centre for Social service)  from 2.6 yrs to 20 yrs all were living happily under one roof. You won't feel like they have some pain which they have masked behind their grin. But when you go dip in to their eyes you can realize they want to ask you 1000 questions, but they are not sure whether you are the right person to answer, you will be there to answer all their queries tomorrow also. People used to come for a day or two spend some time with them, give them some objects, go away & never come back. So how they can trust us, how they are going to give us the rightful consideration.

We just interacted with them for few minutes, got their names, class & discovered their difficulties for few of the complex subjects like physics, chemistry, maths etc. Luckily we were blessed with guys like pawan, Nani, Dipti, Anamika, Vijay & Varaprasad who extended their hep & are the subject matter expert. So we took up their help.

What we realised, despite of growing in an adverse situation like improper parenting, they  demonstrate a great degree of learning agility, their grasping power is way ahead than our expectation. The best part was the mentoring of senior students to their fellow junior was quite commendable.
They are very small & unaware of the  adversities that the external world is having, but they seems to be competent enough to overcome the struggle. They have sky full of dreams in their eyes & agility to achieve them.
What they were looking from us was to get a brother, sister, friend who can love them, who can share joy & sorrows with them, who can talk to them irrespective of their high & lows as a friend & philosopher. They  don't expect money from us they need our attention, love & affection.

"Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names, they are easier to ignore before you see their face, but once you do everything changes "

The above instance is quite true, they were unfamiliar to us till the time we were seeing them for the very first time, the lunch we share with them, the premises we share with them, & the time we shared with them make them very close to our heart. Now we discern our family has expanded, we have Sanghvi, Saipriya, Navyasri ......& many more sisters. Its true, I can't help to fulfil every one's wish but if all of us want then everyone can fulfil someone's wish. Project VR1 is an initiative towards that goal where, with everyone's effort we are going to achieve someone's objective.

Food that enhances obesity & increasing tax rate

With the recent advancement in the medical science & new therapies coming in everyday people are able to live longer & disease free life. In the mid of the 20th century the average life span of  female & male in India was 31 & 32, which is now 69 & 66 years respectively. If we will see this for advanced nations like Japan, European union & US average life span their is 85, 81 & 78 respectively.

However there is a new problem creeping up with increase survival of people. Due to Sedentary life style, improper work life balance & erratic food habits people are encountering a new types of diseases like diabetes, heart disease & cancer. These have been increased many fold in all most all the countries of the world. The tragedy with these diseases are it takes a lot of time to develop in our body. On diagnosis though disease could be controlled by following a healthy life style & good food habit, still we can't get hundred percent cure .

Sometimes due to late diagnosis of these disease it spread rapidly & deactivate most of our important organs inside our body. Therefore these diseases are also called the silent killer. So the most important thing is we should be very cautious in our life style & avoid these type of diseases.

For this first of all we should follow a healthy life style which include regular exercise, consuming  zero tobacco, alcoholic products & stay away from food with high calorie. Today sedentary life style & too much consumption of  junk foods is the main reason for these diseases.

In this regard few countries in the world has already taken some commendable initiatives. In order to discourage high consumption of carbonated beverage & saturated fat these countries have put heavy tax on these foods. Countries like Denmark, France & US are in the forefront in this regard.  Denmark is the first country in the world to apply highest level of tax on saturated fats. In country like Mexico consumption of carbonated beverages ( Cola drinks) has fallen by 5-12% from 2014 level due to increased tax.

Now time has come so that India should take firm initiative in this direction. Few state govt have already taken the initiative in these regards. For example Govt of Kerala has increased the tax rate up to 14.5% on high calorie foods like Pizza, burger, pasta etc. A study conducted among  children & teenage in Kerala has found that not only cities but in villages also rate of obesity is increasing in lower age groups. So there is a consensus building up on increasing the taxes on foods having excessive calories & fat.

In order to get rid of these life style related disease we require awareness among people towards unhealthy lifestyle & unhealthy foods, however  these kind of govt's initiatives can also help  a lot. It is expected that with increase tax if the price of the food will gradually increase then people will stay away from these kind of unhealthy food.

Seriously some times i think, Social Network & Information technology... these are actually boon or bane. Though its a matter of debate but still technology has really make our life more comfortable than earlier. The social media app & tons of information available online has increased our ability to take informed decisions over a period of time.

Social media create highly interactive platforms through which individuals, communities can share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses, organizations, communities, and individuals. It differ from traditional paper-based or industrial media in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy, and permanence.

The recent studies conducted in US has found out that; online communication was more common in younger women and those with more education.

In the study, 41 per cent of women reported some or frequent use of online communication. Texting and email were most common, with 35 per cent of women using it.

Twelve per cent of women reported using Facebook, Twitter or other social media sites, and 12 per cent used web-based support groups.  Many of the patient do this to find out the unmet needs , for questions for which they either feel shy to ask or not get any convincing reply.

They are using these communications to cope, the researchers said. Women who frequently used online communication had more positive feelings about their treatment decision. They were more likely to report a deliberate decision and more likely to be highly satisfied with their decision.

Moreover, the women also reported separate reasons for using each of these media outlets. "Email and texting were primarily to let people know they had been diagnosed. They tended to use social media sites and web-based support groups to interact about treatment options and physician recommendations,"

How important is a role of Caregivers in (Sarcoma) Cancer Treatment ??

The caregiver has one of the hardest jobs in the care of a cancer patient.  The difficulty occurs because of the importance of taking care of two people – the patient and you.  It is important to keep both people in mind as you prepare yourself for the lengthy time from diagnosis through treatment.
You will not be able to give your best if you forget or neglect your own needs. This will be a time of great stress and uncertainty.
Taking Care of Yourself
  • Don’t feel bad about accepting offers of help from others.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help from others.
  • Be specific about what you need.
  • Don’t feel guilty about setting aside a little time for yourself.
  • If you work, ask your company’s human resources department about family-leave policies.
How to avoid frequent calls from near & dear one:
Sarcoma is a scary diagnosis for everyone affected — the patient, family members and close friends. So one of the major problem faced when every one keep on calling every now & then  to get info about you . Of course Its shows their love, concern about you but some times its really irritating.
Caring Bridge is an website which will connect you with your dear so that they will receive updates on your health on regular basis & you need not worry on updating all every now & then.
Managing your Personal Time:
You will also be facing tremendous challenges managing your own time.  If you have children – how will they get to school when you can’t take them, how will they get home, eat meals, etc.  What about work; How much time can I take off? You may find yourself running from home, to school, to work, to a doctor’s appointment, back to  work, an errand or two, and back home again.
You should start to think how you can simply your life. Is there something you do on a daily basis that could be done twice a week?  If someone offers to help, what would make my life a little easier, less stressful?  It may be as simple as picking up your newspaper, stop by and feed the cat, water the plants, or be a backup person if I can’t pick up the kids. Little things can make a big difference. People might ask if they can prepare a dinner and drop it off.  Don’t be afraid to tell them yes and to give suggestions of what to prepare. Cancer patients will often lose interest in some foods and enjoy others.
You should also work hard and not feel guilty about carrying on with some activities that you enjoy.  If you like to walk or run, keep it up.  You may not be able to do it as often or as long as before, but it is important to preserve a little of the “me” time so you can better take care of the patient.  Try to keep up contact with your closest friends by phone, a walk or over a cup of coffee.
Like the patient you will need, at times, an outlet to express frustrations and sadness.  Find someone who can help you through this difficult time.  It may be a friend, a social worker at the hospital, some other health care professional, or a religious leader.
Finally, as much as possible get the rest you need.  You may have to record that late night TV show you enjoy so much or shorten that visit to the hospital.  If you are well rested, you will be happier, healthier and be in a better position to provide the love and care the patient needs.
Taking Care of the Patient
  • Try to support the patient even when you two don’t agree.
  • Remember that every patient is different, as is every caregiver.
  • Help keep and organize a notebook of test results, drugs, treatments, appointments, and questions to ask at the next appointment.
A caregiver has a tremendously difficult job.  Some patients may complain about everything and others will keep all their feelings to them self.  You will want to be there every step of the way and provide support in any way you can.  If the patient is sad, depressed or frustrated, you will need to be a good listener. You will also need to be as honest as you can about your thoughts and needs but you will not want to further upset or depress the patient. It is not uncommon to find the patient providing support to the caregiver. This is a very touch balancing act.
Over time there will be lots of paper (test results, medical reports, etc) and appointments to track.  Many find putting together a notebook can be a tremendous help. A social worker may be able to give you some good ideas.
Part of keeping organized is to be prepared at each doctor’s appointment. Before the appointment have a list of questions that have arisen since the previous appointment.
  1. Changes in symptoms
  2. Questions about medications
  3. Changes in physical or mental well being
  4. Anything else for which you have a question or concern.  No question is too small or “stupid”.  If there is anything that you don’t understand or have any concern, the physician should gladly help.
Also, be prepared to take notes about future appointments, medications, medication schedules, foods to avoid, rules for contact with other people (maybe no visitors if they have a cold).  It can be very hard to remember everything that is said at a doctor’s appointment so writing things down will be a big help and reduce stress.
Although the caregiver can provide much support, the patient may want to connect with others who might have similar experiences.  The Sarcoma Alliance has a very active discussion board.  You can post information about diagnosis and treatment and you will get lots of good information in return.
Caring for a young child
One of the most difficult experiences anyone can face is a serious illness of a young child. A sarcoma diagnosis is particularly difficult because of the many questions about treatment and the ongoing uncertainty how long the treatment process will take.  Many ideas in the section for adult patients apply with one significant difference.
For any child under 18 years old, the parent or guardian caregiver has to serve as the primary advocate for care decisions including all diagnosis and treatment procedures.  The age and maturity of the patient will determine the extent of the patient in the decision making process.  This will vary from one patient to another and will often vary over time as more treatment decisions are discussed and made.  There is no one right answer or approach but it is important that the patient as appropriate understand what is going on and the reasons for decisions.
Thoughts on supporting an adult child
“Parents have to make all the decisions for young children, but it’s different when your child is grown up. Like other adults, he may feel a need to control what he can in a situation that takes away so much autonomy.”
Once cancer has metastasized,  doctors should talk to the patient about quality of life, side effects from further treatment, and what options are available if treatment fails.
One had to recognize the suffering of other family members and his many friends, “who were just like family. Everyone is working in their own way, and other caregivers are hurting just as much as you are.”
